The Byeon Clan Old House in Sabyeong-ri, Geochang has an open square (ㅁ-shaped) layout, in which the women's quarters (anchae) at the centre, together with the men's quarters (sarangchae), the inner men's quarters (ansarangchae), and an angled storehouse wing (gwangchae) built around the inner gate wing (jungmunchae), together form a ㅁ shape. That is, the anchae is set at the rear of the site, with the sarangchae placed opposite it to the right; between them the ansarangchae stands on the right, while on the left an auxiliary wing – a storehouse linked to the jungmunchae – is bent into an L-shape (ㄱ-shape) to connect with the sarangchae, and the outer gate wing (daemunchae) stands in front of the whole. Consequently, anyone entering through the main gate can see only the sarangchae at the front and the auxiliary wing connected to it; to reach the anchae one must follow a passage within the site along the left side of the buildings and enter from the side. To the left of this passage stands, side by side, the house of Byeon Jong-hwan, younger brother of the owner Byeon Jang-hwan. The anchae is a double-depth house (gyeopjip) of four bays across the front and two bays deep; its rooms are arranged in the order kitchen, room, daecheong (open wooden-floored hall), and room, with a toechan (a narrow eaves-side bay) half a bay deep set along the front of the rooms and the hall. Part of the rear of the daecheong is raised somewhat in height and used as a space for ancestral rites, and behind it two small storeroom-like rooms have been added for keeping ritual vessels; the only alterations made to the anchae are this addition, the modernisation of the kitchen, and the fitting of doors across the front of the toechan. It is framed with a five-purlin structure and has single eaves and a hip-and-gable roof. The sarangchae is likewise a double-depth structure of four bays across the front and two bays deep. Each bay at the rear is a room, with a floored area running along the whole front; in front of the middle two rooms the floor is confined to the toechan, while in front of the rooms on the left and right the floored area is larger than the toechan. The left-hand room has a hamsil-agungi (a firebox set beneath the floor without an attached cooking pot) below it and is finished as a raised wooden-floored room. The sarangchae is also framed with five purlins, and to reinforce the structural weakness arising from this arrangement of the floor, auxiliary beams (chungnyang) are raised on both side elevations. Its eaves and roof, like those of the anchae, are single eaves with a hip-and-gable roof. The ansarangchae is a jeontoejip (a house with a front veranda bay) of three bays across the front and one and a half bays deep, with the left two bays made into rooms and the right bay into a daecheong. It has single eaves and a hipped roof.
