Ingok Village School, Sancheong
산청 인곡서당 · 山淸 江樓里 仁谷書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIngok Village School was built in 1934 by Gwon Jae-gyu (sobriquet Songsan, 1835–1893), a Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period, as a place to teach his disciples. Gwon Jae-gyu was a tenth-generation descendant of Gwon Geuk-yu (sobriquet Ucheon) and one of the leading figures of the Noron faction in the Gangu region, west of the Nakdong River, carrying on the scholarship of Gi Jeong-jin (sobriquet Nosan). Even today, a memorial rite for Gwon Jae-gyu is held every year on jungjeong-il, the middle "jeong" day of the third lunar month, at Gyeonghyeonsa Shrine behind Ingok Village School. Gyeonghyeonsa Shrine, the inner three-bay gate (naesammun), Ingok Village School and the gatehouse building are arranged along a single axis facing south, and the whole complex is enclosed by a wall built of earth and stone. Ingok Village School measures five bays across the front and two bays deep, while Gyeonghyeonsa Shrine measures three bays across the front and one bay deep. The concentrated spatial composition of the village school's floor plan, the functional differentiation of its spaces, and the features of its plan, structure and design as a modern-era hanok together clearly illustrate the characteristics of hanok architecture from the modern period.
