Seonsan Kim Clan Historical Documents, Geochang

The historical documents held by Kim Sun-beom consist of household-register documents (two junhoguk, preliminary household registers, and 35 hogudanja, household register certificates) and other documents (two sangseo, petitions to the authorities; four soji, petitions; and two wanmun, official directives). It is quite rare nationwide for such a large body of household-register material to survive from a family whose social status was once unstable. The 37 household-register documents surviving in this family are important material for studying not only the family's own history but also the social changes of the time. The various petitions, too, mostly appeal against grievances arising from the imposition of military-service duties or general corvée labour on the family because of its unstable social status, and the wanmun are documents recording measures taken in response to such appeals. These eight documents, read together with the household registers, are likewise important basic material for studying the social changes of the period.
