Ogye Seowon developed from Ogye Jeongsa, a study hall built in 1570, the third year of King Seonjo, by Ganjae Yi Deok-hong. After the hall fell into disrepair during the Japanese invasions of 1592, his eldest son Yi Si moved it to Ssanggye village in 1600, the thirty-third year of King Seonjo, and hung plaques for Gwanseongjae and Gwanseoheon written in the calligraphy of Han Ho. In 1665, the sixth year of King Hyeonjong, the spirit tablet of Yi Deok-hong was enshrined and Dojonsa Shrine was built. The academy was raised to the status of Ogye Seowon in 1691, and after great floods in 1699 and 1707 changed the course of the river and caused flood damage to the academy, it was moved to its present site. It was demolished under Emperor Gojong's order abolishing Confucian academies, but the enshrinement of the spirit tablet was resumed in 1919, and Dojonsa Shrine was rebuilt in 1978.
