Hyojeonggak Pavilion, Hapcheon
합천 효정각 · 陝川 孝貞閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHyojeonggak faces west, standing beside a through road that passes through Ssangbaek. It is a typical hyojagak, a memorial pavilion honouring an act of filial piety, set within a wall of mixed earth and stone along with a single-leaf gate and a protective shelter. It measures one bay across the front and one bay deep; only the rear has a solid wall, while the other three sides are all fitted with latticed windows so that the interior can be seen from outside. Rounded granite foundation stones support round, thick columns that give the building a sturdy appearance. The frame is a three-rafter structure in which a scroll-shaped king-post rises from the main beam to support the ridge purlin, and its members are larger and sturdier than the usual standard. The bracket sets are of the double-bracket-arm type and are used only on the front and rear, not on the sides. At the four corners, the eave-purlin support beam is extended to reach the wind-break boards, and the lintel tie-beam is likewise extended, with bracket arms and small blocks placed above it to support the purlin support beam. Between the lintel tie-beam and the eave-purlin support beam, decorative beam-supports carved with goblin-mask motifs are inserted, and from the column-head blocks of the four columns, long dragon-head carvings extend diagonally inward as ornament. The roof is a double-eaved gable roof. Hyojeonggak can be regarded as an exemplary model of the layout and framing typical of memorial-pavilion architecture.
