Gumijabisa Temple Lotus Sutra
구미자비사묘법연화경 · 구미자비사묘법연화경

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Lotus Sutra, also known as the Beophwagyeong, was the fundamental scripture of the Cheontae school and remains one of the fundamental scriptures of Korean Buddhism today. It was widely circulated from the Three Kingdoms period onward; hand-copying and printing of it flourished during Goryeo, and it continued to be printed steadily through Joseon as well. It was produced less as a text for recitation than to generate merit for the donors who sponsored it, in keeping with devotion to the sutra itself. This copy is a single incomplete volume containing fascicles 1 and 2 of the original seven, and since it lacks a colophon recording the printing, its exact date cannot be determined. However, a complete set of the same edition has been designated a Treasure, and on the basis of the calligraphic style, printing layout and carving technique, this copy is judged to be a print predating the Imjin War, the Japanese invasions of Korea that began in 1592.
