Naengcheon House was built around 1720 by Yi Yu-won (pen name Naengcheon, 1695–1773), the great-grandson of Yi Hwi-il (pen name Jonjae). Its layout is an open square (口-shaped) plan. At the front, centred on the middle gate bay, a cattle shed stands to the left and two bays of sarangbang (men's rooms) to the right, with a narrow wooden veranda (jjokmaru) running along their front and side. The anchae (women's quarters) is centred on a two-bay daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, with a sangbang and an anbang (main bedroom) to its left and a geonneonbang, a room across the hall, to its right; a kitchen stands in front of the anbang. The lower quarters (araechae) contain one storeroom bay and an ondol, or heated-floor, room. This open-square house is rare for the Yeongdeok region, and although it ranks below the area's other already-designated historic houses — Myeonunjae House, Jonjae Jongtaek and Garam House — in the form, structure and scale of its architecture, it is architecturally significant, for example in its use of an old-style tongpyeonggodae, a type of roof-support timber.
