Yeongyang Nam Clan Sinamgongpa Head House
영양남씨신암공파종택 · 英陽南氏 愼菴公派 宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house, built in the mid-18th century by the Andong Gwon clan, was purchased in 1893 by descendants of the Yeongyang Nam clan branch founded by Nam Son (pen name Sinam, 1415–1488), the clan's founding ancestor to settle in the area; they have lived there ever since, using it as their clan head house. The head house stands facing south-west in the inner part of Chomak-gol valley; the lower house and mill house have been lost, and only the L-shaped main house and a restored sarangchae (men's quarters) remain. The main hall (jeongchim) is an L-shaped building four bays across the front and five bays to the side. In plan, centred on the bongdang (open earthen-floored space) and daecheong (wooden-floored hall) in the middle bay, the anbang (women's main room) was placed to the left, with a kitchen and storeroom attached in front of it, forming an overall L-shaped plan. To the right were placed a sangbang (secondary room) and a wooden-floored room; a floor was laid behind the sangbang so that the daecheong also forms an L-shape, and behind the wooden-floored room a mobang (corner room) was placed. Above the anbang and mobang no walls were installed, leaving the loft space exposed, with ventilation holes placed in the gable, making it a clear example of a kkachi-gumeong-jip (a "magpie-hole house", with gable vents for smoke and air).
