Jo Gwan-bin (1699–1756), the 18th-generation descendant of the Hanyang Jo clan, built this house in 1719. The present building appears to have been rebuilt in 1899, and was repaired in 1977 by Jo Jong-ho (1904–1987), who had devoted himself to the independence movement and the enlightenment movement during the Japanese colonial period, bringing the house to its present form. The main house is a square (口-shaped) building, six bays wide and six bays deep. In plan, centred on the middle-gate bay, a stable and a chodangbang (thatched room) are placed to the left, while to the right is the sarang (men's quarters) area, made up of a two-bay sarangbang (reception room) and a gamsil-maru (shrine floor) room; the gamsil-maru room on the right and the chodangbang on the left each project outward by one bay, giving the house a plan with wings on both sides. Passing through the middle-gate bay, across the inner courtyard, stands the two-bay andaecheong (main women's hall). To its left, the anbang (main bedroom), kitchen and jeongjigobang (kitchen storeroom) are joined together to form the left wing, while to its right the geonneobang (side room), a passage bay, a large storeroom and a middle room form the right wing.
