Seongmun Head House, Yecheon
예천 석문종택 · 醴泉 石門宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built in 1609 (the first year of King Gwanghaegun's reign) by Seongmun Jeong Yeong-bang. A single straight-row thatched gate block stands at the front, and behind it a tile-roofed main block laid out in a U-shape; together the two form an overall square courtyard plan that is open on one side. Within the main block, the women's quarters and the men's quarters are set at right angles to one another, so that the inner and outer spaces are divided to left and right. This arrangement and floor plan is a type found mainly in houses built from the late nineteenth century onward, making it important material for understanding how the traditional Korean house has changed over time.
