Yun Gwang-su House in Maehwa-ri, Uljin
울진 매화리 윤광수 가옥 · 蔚珍 梅花里 尹光洙 家屋

The Yun Gwang-su House stands facing south-east at the entrance to Yunchon village (in Maehwa-ri), once a clan village of the Paepyeong Yun lineage, with Namsusan Mountain behind it. It is said to have been built around 1750 (the 26th year of King Yeongjo of Joseon) and was repaired around 1960. The house is a tteuljip (a courtyard-type house) measuring four bays across the front and four bays to the side, with the sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters) joined to form a closed, box-shaped plan. Structurally, square posts stand on rough fieldstone plinths set on a natural-stone foundation; the upper structure of both the sarangchae and anchae is a simple samnyangga (three-purlin frame), with short king posts set on the main beam to support the ridge purlin. Although this house has been partially altered through several rounds of repair, as a tteuljip with a narrow wooden floor laid between the anchae and sarangchae, it allows the process by which hanok spaces were transformed in response to changing ways of life to be traced, giving it significance in architectural history.
