Bonghwa Geum Clan Gunwigong Head House
봉화금씨군위공종택 · 奉化琴氏 軍威公宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn the early Goryeo period, Geum Ui (posthumous title Yeongnyeolgong, 1153–1230), the founding ancestor of the Bonghwa Geum clan, came down and settled in this area; the house was first built in the 1450s, and his descendants, living on here over generations, enlarged and rebuilt it several times. The present head house belongs to the line of Geum Gye, the fourth son of Geum Hoe, who served as magistrate of Eunjin and was a 12th-generation descendant of Geum Ui. The sotdaemun (raised gate) and servants' quarters have been lost, and today only the square (口)-shaped main hall (jeongchim) and the straight lower house remain. The jeongchim is a 口-shaped building six bays across the front and five bays to the side. Samasan Mountain, which surrounds the head house, preserves unchanged the place name "Gosama", a county name from the Goguryeo period; it is thus both the place of origin of the Bonghwa Geum clan and a witness to the long history of the Bonghwa region.
