Amitabha Triad Buddhist Painting of Hwabangsa Temple, Namhae
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This taenghwa (Buddhist painting) was created to be enshrined as a wonbul (personal votive Buddha image) in an inbeopdang (a hall combining residence and Dharma hall) or a monks' quarters. It depicts the Buddha Amitabha, fitted with a head halo and body halo, as the principal icon, flanked above by the disciples Kasyapa and Ananda, and below by the bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha. It is an Amitabha Triad painting notable for its relatively simple yet condensed, economical composition. A fairly detailed hwagi (production inscription) survives, recording that it was made in 1860 by the geumeo (master painter-monk) Jeongsu. It has value as reference material for the study of late Joseon-period Amitabha Triad paintings.
