O Geuk-seong Historic House
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This house was built by O Geuk-seong (pen name Munwoldang), who retired to his hometown after being ranked a third-class Seonmuwonjong merit subject, an honour awarded for service in suppressing the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-98, the Imjin War). O Geuk-seong belonged to the Hamyang O clan; his courtesy name was Seongbo and his pen name Munwoldang. In 1592, at the age of thirty-four, when the Imjin War broke out, he wrote on his wall the words 'repay the Japanese invaders', applied himself in earnest to the study of military strategy and the martial arts, and passed the military examination in 1594. He went on to win distinction repeatedly during both the Imjin War and the Manchu invasion of 1636, contributing to the nation's recovery from these crises, and after the fighting ended he was ranked a third-class Seonmuwonjong merit subject. The house itself is a square-shaped building measuring seven bays across the front and four bays deep. In its floor plan, centred on the middle-gate bay, the sarang (men's reception) quarters - consisting of two rooms and a wooden floor - lie to the left, and a single heated room, a kitchen and a storeroom lie to the right; the sarang floor on the left and the storeroom on the right each project outward by one bay, giving the house the plan of a building with two projecting wings.
