Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChungsinmun Gate is a jeonggak, a commemorative gate honouring loyalty, built to celebrate the loyalty of Park I-hyeon (posthumous title Uimingong) and his son Park Yeong-seo (posthumous title Chungjanggong). Park I-hyeon was the seventh-generation descendant of Park Ga-gwon, Governor of Gaeseong under Goryeo and the founding ancestor of the Suncheon Park clan's settlement in Seongju; he served as a righteous army commander and achieved great merit during the Japanese invasions of 1592. Park Yeong-seo died for the country during Yi Gwal's Rebellion. The building has two bays across the front and one bay in depth, with a gabled roof, and was first built in 1692, the 18th year of King Sukjong, to display the plaque of the jeongnyeo (commendation for loyalty) granted to the two men in 1625, the 10th year of King Injo; it has survived to the present day. The righteous army commander Park I-hyeon was a disciple of Jo Sik (pen name Nammyeong). During the Japanese invasions of 1592 he joined Gim Myeon's righteous army, achieved great merit, and was killed in action at the Battle of Gacheon in Seongju; in recognition of his achievements he was posthumously granted the post of Participant of the Ministry of Works (Gongjo Chamui). Afterwards, when his son Park Yeong-seo died for the country during Yi Gwal's Rebellion, he was further posthumously promoted to Minister of the Ministry of Works (Gongjo Panseo) and given the posthumous title Uimin. Park Yeong-seo, Magistrate of Changseong, passed the military service examination, and during Yi Gwal's Rebellion in 1624, the second year of King Injo, became vanguard commander under Supreme Commander Jang Man. He took part in the Battle of Singyo in Hwangju together with Nam I-heung, Jeong Chung-sin and others, and died for the country in the midst of the fighting. He was later posthumously promoted to Minister of War (Byeongjo Panseo) and given the posthumous title Chungjang. Chungsinmun Gate is relatively early in date of construction and is well preserved, and because of the outstanding loyalty of the father and son Park I-hyeon and Park Yeong-seo associated with the building, it holds historical and educational value worthy of note.
