Dongsanjae is the collective name for a group of buildings belonging to the Seokjeon lineage of the Gwangju Yi clan: Nakchonjeong, a four-bay-by-two-bay, single-eaved, hip-and-gable-roofed wooden tile-roofed hall built in 1913 to honour the virtuous conduct of Yi Do-jang (pen name Nakchon); Gyeongamjae, a four-bay-by-two-bay, single-eaved, hip-and-gable-roofed wooden tile-roofed hall built in 1903 to commemorate the virtue and achievements of his eldest son Yi Won-jeong (pen name Gwiam); Soamjae, a four-bay-by-one-bay, single-eaved, gabled-roof wooden tile-roofed hall built for the separate ancestral rites of his eldest grandson Yi Dam-myeong (pen name Jeongje); together with the tomb chamber, the gate quarters and the custodian's house. The jaesa (ancestral hall) and jeongsa (pavilion) buildings form a single compound; although the order of construction runs in reverse to the genealogical sequence, the complex has the distinctive feature of maintaining a clear architectural hierarchy. Since most of the buildings have survived without major alteration since their original construction, they are valuable as basic material for research into the architectural history of the period, and Gyeongsangbuk-do designated the site as a cultural heritage material of monumental character.
