Yeongeunsa Temple is said, by oral tradition, to have been abandoned in the late nineteenth century. Chronologically and stylistically, the earliest of its stupas is that of Wolamdang, made in 1743, and it is judged that production continued intensively thereafter up to the end of the eighteenth century. The seven stupas that survive today at Baegunam Hermitage allow us to infer the former scale of Yeongeunsa Temple and that eminent, virtuous monks once resided there. The stupas' style also shows the free, strongly regional character found in western Gyeongsangnam-do, making them valuable material for the study of the Buddhist history of Hamyang and of monks' stupas in the late Joseon period.
