Soyangseowon Confucian Academy stands roughly midway through Jeongok-ri village in Gaeun-eup, on a site with an excellent view, backed by a hill and facing south; the lecture and memorial spaces each form separate enclosures arranged one behind the other. When Confucian academies were abolished nationwide in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, only the shrine here was demolished, while the lecture hall and the east dormitory (dongjae) were retained, and the lecture hall still preserves its appearance from that time relatively well. The ceiling of the lecture hall is fitted with a long jongbo (ridge tie-beam) running the width between the jongbo above the two side rooms (cheongbang), and its coffered finish is formed by long banjadae (ceiling battens) laid in the direction of the dori (purlins) with banjapan (ceiling boards) fitted between them, producing a distinctive ceiling arrangement that reveals the building's architectural value. The academy is also historically notable for enshrining five men born in the area near Gaeun in the 16th century, who went on to serve in central government posts such as jwarang (a sixth-rank official) at the Ministry of Rites and the Ministry of Punishments before returning in their later years to their hometown, where they devoted great effort to the region's development: Naam Jeong Eon-sin, Inbaekdang Kim Nak-chun, Gosan Nam Yeong, Gaeun Sim Dae-bu and Gaeun Yi Sim.
