Wonpae of Hwabangsa Temple, Namhae
남해 화방사 원패 · 南海 花芳寺 願牌

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWonpae are wooden ritual tablets inscribed with prayers and installed in a Buddhist hall. Wonpae 1 bears the characters "Myriad Spirits of the Three Realms and Four Offices" in yellow on a vermilion ground, while wonpae 2 bears the characters "Long Live Korean Independence" in white on a black ground. Wonpae 1 has a phoenix and clouds carved on its head and body, and is separable from its lotus pedestal. The phoenix on the head faces left, while the phoenix on the body faces downward. The pedestal is painted vermilion, and the phoenix is coloured in green, white, red and ochre, though the colours have faded considerably. Unlike wonpae 2, the front and back faces of this tablet do not separate. Wonpae 2 has a dragon and clouds carved on its head and body. Here the lotus pedestal and the body are joined and cannot be separated, while the front and back faces of the tablet can be. On the head, the dragon on the left faces upward and the dragon on the right faces downward. The head and body were carved separately and then joined, and the front and back faces are fixed together with nails; after carving, the piece was coloured in white, green, vermilion and yellow. Comparing the carving technique of the two tablets, wonpae 1 shows more linear expression and appears to have been made earlier.
