Nahanjeon Hall Nae Je Statue of Dodeogam Hermitage, Chilgok
칠곡 도덕암 나한전내 제상 · 漆谷 道德庵 羅漢殿內 諸像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDodeogam Hermitage, a branch temple of the 9th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, is said to have been founded in 435, the 18th year of King Nulji of Silla. In 1632, the 10th year of King Injo, the Seon master Hunjang enshrined sixteen arhat (nahan) images together with two standing envoy figures (saja, deities believed to report human deeds to the underworld) in Nahanjeon Hall. Inside the hall there is an altar, above which the principal Buddha image sits in the full lotus position, while the bodhisattva images to either side are unusual in that both have their hands placed on their knees and wear distinctive robes. The bodhisattva attendant on the right is said to be Dipankara Bodhisattva, and the one on the left, Maitreya Bodhisattva. All three images are gilded over the entire body except for the hair. Around the Sakyamuni Triad in Nahanjeon Hall, eight seated arhat images stand on each of the left and right sides. Of the two standing envoy figures, one is known as Jikbusaja, and the one on the viewer's left is known as Gamjaesaja. The arhat and standing figures are all painted white over the entire body, with the eyes, eyebrows, mouth and beard rendered in blue, green and other colours. The objects they hold or carry vary widely - phoenixes, staffs, tigers, trays bearing watermelons, books and so on - and are depicted in a distinctive manner. According to the temple's historical record (sajeokgi), Nahanjeon Hall was built in 1632, the 10th year of King Injo, by the Seon master Hunjang, and since the images enshrined within the hall are well preserved and retain clear detail, they have been designated a cultural heritage material.
