Andong Irodang Hall is a study hall (jeongsa) built by Ho-bong Yi Don (1568–1624), a mid-Joseon official and scholar, after he resigned from office and returned to his hometown, in order to educate his descendants and the children of the local area. It stands at the highest point on the right side of Maae Village, facing southwest, with fields spreading out in front; beyond them the Nakdonggang River winds its way past, and on the far bank the cliffs of Jeokbyeok Sambong (Three Peaks of Jeokbyeok) unfold like a folding screen to form a spectacular view — an ideal site in every respect for a study hall meant for both learning and rest. The building is a single-eaved hip-and-gable (paljak) roofed structure four kan wide and one-and-a-half kan deep, with one ondol (heated-floor) room at each end; except for the ondol room on the left, the remaining three kan at the front have a toenmaru (narrow veranda) along the front. The front of the daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) is left entirely open, while the rear has a pair of panelled frame doors set above a panmeoreum (low wooden sill board). A decorative iron fitting called a cheorwonsan is set into the upper frame of the panelled doors; this type of door ironwork, found only in old buildings, attests to Irodang's long history. The roof frame above the daecheong is a five-purlin (oryangga) structure, with dongjaju (short posts) set above the jangtongbo (long beam) in the sambun byeonjak (three-part division) method, lending the design a sense of stability. It also shares, together with Sansujeong Pavilion (Folklore Material No. 122), a view of the magnificent Jeokbyeok Sambong cliffs that symbolise Maae Village, overlooking them as its scenic outlook; having long served as a place of study, it stands as an important element of the historical and cultural landscape of Maae Village.
