Gosanjae Hall was founded in 1778 (the second year of King Jeongjo), led by An Yeo-seok, pen name Seolsanjae, the fifth-generation descendant of An Gi-jong, who had posthumously been honoured as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel. It is a hall of long standing that produced many patriots, including Supa, Song-eun and Baeksan, and countless talented individuals who honed their scholarship here, passing the civil and military service examinations to become accomplished Confucian scholars. As a building of the late Joseon period, it was a place where scholars pursued learning in a quiet setting while training the next generation. Its spaces are simple yet refined, combining formal dignity with the elegance of its raised wooden floor, without ever becoming extravagant.
