Toegang Cathedral is situated below the foot of Joamsan Mountain, near the site of the old Toegang (also called Mulmi) ferry crossing on the Nakdonggang River, and is the first Catholic church built in the Sangju area. It was the cradle of the Catholic faith in the northern Gyeongbuk region and, as a church that represents the history of Korean Catholicism, occupies an important place in the history of the Catholic Church. The main sanctuary, built in 1956, is also of great value as a modern building whose elevation and floor plan display the features of the Gothic style. Together with Gasil Parish Church in Seongju and the parish church in Gimcheon, it is an important record illustrating the history of Catholicism in Gyeongbuk.
