Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDo Cheon Historic House is located in Mundan-ri, along the national road running from Bonghwa to Yeongju. Its exact date of construction is unknown, but it is said to have been built around 1820, in the early 19th century, by Jungmuk, the seventh-generation descendant of Hong I-seong (1556–1606), who had held the degree of jinsa, a licentiate who had passed the lower level of the state examination, in the mid-Joseon period. This south-facing building, with gobangchae (storehouse wings) placed on either side of the sarangchae, the main hall, and the anchae, the women's quarters, shows the typical square, ㅁ-shaped layout of a scholar-gentry house of this region. The roof of the gobangchae connecting from either side of the anchae to the sarangchae, together with the curve of the sarangchae's own roof, forms a curved shape found only in this region, clearly expressing its local character. In particular, the ya (亞)-shaped brick decoration on the platform in front of the sarangchae is a unique feature found only in this house, and shows well the dignity of the house at the time it was built. Although it is a scholar-gentry house, the sarangchae displays an unpretentious, old-fashioned character and craftsmanship, and the house retains its original appearance well. For these reasons it is considered worth preserving and has been designated a cultural heritage material.
