Chunguigak Pavilion, Uiryeong
의령 충의각 · 宜寧 忠義閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChunguigak Pavilion is a wooden building in the dapo (multi-cluster bracket), paljak (hip-and-gable roof) style, first built in 1910. It is a memorial pavilion bearing a plaque inscribed with the posthumously conferred titles and ancestral hometowns of General Gwak Jae-u, known by his sobriquet Mangudang, and of the 17 jangnyeong, military commanders who served under him. It was built using the traditional architectural style of Korean wooden buildings, with no iron nails used anywhere in the structure, and, raised in the dapo paljak style of the late Joseon period, it is a building modelled on the shape of a traditional funeral bier, expressing a wish for the Buddhist paradise of the Pure Land.
