Suamjeong Pavilion, Hapcheon
합천 수암정 · 陜川 修巖亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSuamjeong Pavilion was built by Sim Neung-baek (pen name Suam, 1783–1862), a scholar of the late Joseon period, as a place to study and to teach students. It originally stood about 500 metres below this site, but his great-grandson Sim Jong-hwan (1876–1933), honouring his great-grandfather's wishes, moved it here and rebuilt it to nurture talented students and teach classical Chinese studies. The building is known to have been constructed in 1914. It has three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof, a room on the right, and raised wooden-floored verandas on the left and front. During the March First Independence Movement of 1919 in Hapcheon, patriots including Kim Yeong-gi and Chu Yong-man gathered secretly at Suamjeong Pavilion to plan the independence demonstrations.
