Waseonjeong Pavilion was a gathering place for five scholars — Sim Jang-se (pen name Gakgeumdang, 1594–1660), Hong U-jeong (pen name Dugok), Jeong Yang (pen name Po-ong), Gang Heup (pen name Jameun) and Hong Seok (pen name Sonudang) — who met and associated with one another here. They named the rock "Sadeok" ("awaiting virtue") and the terrace "Waseon" ("reclining immortal"), and the pavilion they built took the name Waseonjeong. After the Manchu invasion of 1636, they gave up their official posts and withdrew into seclusion at Chunyang, below Taebaeksan Mountain, where they upheld their loyalty to the fallen Ming dynasty; they came to be known to the world as the Five Worthies of Taebaek. To honour the virtue these Five Worthies left behind, their descendants still gather once a year to hold a commemorative meeting.
