Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJeon Won-bal (pen name Gukpa, title Chuksan Buwongun) came first in the state examination in 1315, during the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, and was later selected in Yuan China from among Goryeo's talented officials, rising to the posts of Geumja Gwangnok-daebu, Minister of War, and Grand Scholar of the Hall of Worthies. Through a memorial he submitted to Emperor Shun of Yuan, the tribute Goryeo paid to the Yuan court was reduced, a benefit that continued into the Joseon dynasty. Cheongwonjeong was built by him in his later years as a place to live in quiet ease, and was rebuilt in 1918 in accordance with the wishes of the local community. Inside the pavilion is a poem by Toegye Yi Hwang, and on the rock face beside it is an inscription reading "Cheongwonjeong", written in seal script by his friend Kim Gu-yong (pen name Cheokyakjae). Cheongwonjeong was designated a Gyeongsangbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material on 18 December 2009, and the Gukpa Jeon Won-bal Memorial Hall was built alongside it as part of the local cultural heritage museum.
