Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJinjusangmusa was established following the promulgation of the Sangmu hoeuiso gyurye (Regulations of the Commercial Council) in 1895. It was a commercial organisation of the late Joseon period that protected the interests of bosang (itinerant merchants carrying wrapped goods) and busang (peddlers carrying goods on their backs) and oversaw commercial activity across a jurisdiction of seventeen districts: Jinju, Gonyang, Hadong, Namhae, Goseong, Jinnam (Tongyeong), Haman, Danseong, Sancheong, Samga, Hamyang, Anui, Geochang, Hapcheon, Chogye and Uiryeong. Originally located in the town centre, the building was swept away by a great flood in 1936. In 1938 local business figures pooled their resources to rebuild it on its present site, where it has remained ever since. Very few sangmusa buildings survive as traditional wooden tile-roofed structures, which gives it very high value as a symbolic record. Various records are also displayed inside the building as hanging plaques, allowing a view of the state of local economic activity around the late Joseon period and the Japanese colonial period. Besides the building itself, Jinjusangmusa also preserves economic-activity documents, including the Sajeon cheonggeumnok (a membership register), together with seals once used by the organisation, providing important material for research into the market system centred on Jinju and into the bobusang (itinerant peddler) system.
