Daeungjeon Hall Seated Wooden Shakyamuni Buddha of Sangnaksa Temple, Sangju
상주 상락사 대웅전 목조석가여래좌상 · 尙州 常樂寺 大雄殿 木造釋迦如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seated wooden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in the lotus position, with the right leg placed uppermost, the right hand forming the earth-touching gesture (chokjiin) and the left hand forming the preaching gesture (seolbeobin). The head, including the usnisa (the cranial protuberance symbolising wisdom), is so large that it accounts for more than a third of the statue's total height, while the torso is comparatively narrow and small in proportion. The robe is worn so that it also slightly covers the right shoulder, and a skirt-like lower garment is worn beneath it. The upper edge of this lower garment, visible above the abdomen, is shaped like several overlapping lotus petals, and above the left knee the hem of the robe flares outward away from the body — a highly distinctive feature worth noting. Stylistic features suggest that the statue was made in the late Joseon period. It survives in good condition, retaining its complete original form, and the work is notable for its bold proportions and meticulous carving technique.
