Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYulsujae Hall sits against a gently sloping hillside behind the village of Inui-ri, facing south-east. It was built as a place of study to commemorate the legacy of Jo Wi (pen name Maegye, posthumous title Munjanggong, 1454–1503), a great Neo-Confucian scholar and writer of King Seongjong's reign, on the site where he was born and spent his childhood. As with most studies and retreats built by scholars from the 16th century onward in keeping with the Neo-Confucian view of nature, which favoured sites commanding a fine prospect, Yulsujae Hall too occupies a place with an excellent view.
