Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis memorial gate pavilion was built to commemorate the filial conduct of Do Hyeong (pen name Haengjeong), a scholar-official of the mid-Joseon period. Do Hyeong (1480–1547), whose family seat was Seongju, was the son of Do Maeng-nyeong, who had held the jinsa degree (a licentiate qualification from the state examinations). He devoted himself to scholarship and had no ambition for advancement, and so did not sit the state examinations. However, in 1519, the fourteenth year of King Jungjong, when Jo Gwang-jo and others were leading sarim (literati) politics, he was recommended for his learning and conduct to the Hyeollyanggwa, a special examination for men of virtue and ability, and entered official service, serving as Jeongeon in the Saganwon (Office of the Censor-General) and Jeonjeok in the Seonggyungwan (National Confucian Academy), among other posts. He suffered in two literati purges, the Gimyo sahwa and the Eulsa sahwa, after which he retired to his home village and devoted himself wholly to scholarship. It is said that his filial devotion was extreme and that he gave his utmost in caring for his parents, that his household discipline was strict and proper, that the affection between him and his brothers was deep, and that he was trustworthy in his friendships. The memorial gate was built after Kim Gyeong-chan and other Confucian students of Andong submitted a petition (sangeon) in 1816, the sixteenth year of King Sunjo, requesting that a posthumous title and a royal commendation (jeongnyeo) be granted. King Sunjo approved the request, the Ministry of Rites issued the commendation the following year (1817), and the pavilion itself was erected in 1818, the eighteenth year of King Sunjo. The pavilion measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side — a unit of traditional bay spacing — making it one of the largest of its kind in the province, and it shows an architectural distinction in the umulmaru, a grid-framed wooden floor, installed inside, giving it high value as a piece of cultural heritage.
