Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Ksitigarbha painting (jijang taenghwa, a Buddhist painting of the bodhisattva who saves beings in the underworld), produced in 1876, was originally enshrined in Muryangsujeon Hall and is now kept in Myeongbujeon Hall, the Hall of the Afterlife. The painting depicts a seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva at the centre, together with the Ten Kings of the Underworld and their attendants. Around the central Ksitigarbha triad, the odd-numbered Kings, together with their judges, messengers and underworld guards, are arranged on the left, and the even-numbered Kings with theirs on the right. In addition, six bodhisattvas are placed symmetrically around Ksitigarbha at the top of the composition. The simplified patterning, the heavily shaded rendering of the drapery folds, and the striking use of red, green, blue, yellow and white all clearly display the stylistic features typical of the late 19th century.
