Jogeom Chukcheondan Altar Stele, Yeongyang
영양 조검 축천단비 · 英陽 趙儉 祝天壇碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis heritage site is a memorial monument built after his death by Confucian scholars of northern Yeongnam, who joined together to honour the loyalty of Jogeom (pen name Suwol). Jogeom was widely known as a filial son for his utmost devotion in caring for his grandmother, for which he received the state's grace of tax and labour exemption; during the Japanese invasions of Korea, while still in his early twenties, he joined the righteous army of commander Gwak Jae-u and achieved brilliant military merit, for which he was inducted as a Seonmu Wonjong Merit Subject. When the Manchu invasion of 1636 broke out, he was already elderly and could not take part in the fighting, so together with his younger brother Sawolgong he built an altar behind their house and prayed to Heaven for victory; later generations called this the loyal deed of the Chukcheondan, the altar for praying to Heaven. On the site where the Chukcheondan altar once stood is a stele erected in 1827, preserved in its original form; the inscription was written by Ganggo Yu Sim-chun, and the text recording the raising of the stele pavilion's ridge beam was written by Unsan Yi Hwi-jae. The stele pavilion fell into disrepair during the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, and was repaired in the 1980s.
