Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYugudang Hall was built by Seok-u, a descendant of six brothers whose names shared the character byeong (炳: Byeonggu, Byeongnae, Byeongeun, Byeongju, Byeonghyo and Byeongmin). Pooling the brothers' wishes, Seok-u, together with distant relatives (second cousins and their nephews), built the hall after discussion; it was used as a village school (seodang) until the 1960s. Yi Sang-hak (pen name Chunsan), a leading figure of the Confucian literati and a classical scholar, together with Yun Seok-hui (pen name Seongam) and the patriotic independence activist Yun Jung-su, studied at Yugudang. The hall faces east, with a front of five bays and a side of three bays; the interior timber framing and carving are distinctive. It has a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof built in the napdori style. According to the ridge-raising record, the columns were erected in the gapjin year of the sangwon cycle, on the imo day of the third month (the 13th), at the sa hour (9–11 a.m.), and the ridge beam was raised on the jeongyu day of the same month (the 28th), at the mi hour (1–3 p.m.). The rafters and roof tiles were repaired in 2004. The boards inscribed 'Yugudang', 'Donmokjae' and 'Jeongyangheon' bear the calligraphy of Yu Chang-hwan (pen name Udang, 1870–1935).
