Cheonunjeong Pavilion, Yeongju
영주 천운정 · 榮州 天雲亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCheonunjeong is a pavilion built in 1588 by Baegam Kim Reuk, who had served as Minister of Personnel, for him to spend his later years. After its construction it fell into disrepair and collapsed; it was relocated at an unknown date, but collapsed again, and in 1762 it was moved to its present site and rebuilt, with a pond created in front of it. Kim Reuk built three pavilions in Yeongcheon (present-day Yeongju): Gwihakjeong and Seobyeokjeong to the west, and Cheonunjeong to the east. Seobyeokjeong was later abandoned, while Cheonunjeong has passed down the family's scholarly tradition through the generations, and it is said that the pavilion took its name from the pond in front of it. Gwihakjeong was relocated to Mundan-ri, Bonghwa-eup, in 1988. Cheonunjeong, rebuilt in 1762 as a pavilion for study and rest, occupies a site well suited to fulfilling that function. Although its structural style is not outstanding, its floor plan has retained the form of its original construction through later relocations and reconstructions without major change, and for this conservation value it has been designated Gyeongsangbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material.
