거창 사병리 밀양변씨고가 · 居昌 士屛里 密陽卞氏古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Miryang Byeon clan's old house is a house that shows well the typical dwelling of a wealthy farming family of the late Joseon period; the main hall (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and the storehouse (gotganchae) survive largely in their original form, making it valuable academic material for understanding the outlook and way of life of wealthy farmers of the time. The anchae is four bays wide and three bays deep, with square posts measuring 230 by 230 mm; the purlins (dori) are of the napdori (rectangular) type, in a half-five-purlin (ban-oryangga) frame, with a plain-eaved hip-and-gable (paljak) roof finished with wagudo ridge-end tiles. The main ridge is finished with stepped ridge tiles. The kitchen survives well in its original form, complete with its cooking hearths; the plank doors and plank walls of the kitchen are decorated with patterns that also allow for ventilation and light. A mezzanine loft is set above the kitchen, along with a small side room and a small side door. The central bay of the anchae is laid with well-frame (umul) flooring and used as a space for the ancestral tablets. The sarangchae is four bays wide and three bays deep, with square posts measuring 200 by 200 mm joined to capital blocks (judu), the small bearing blocks (soro) and tie-beam members (changbang) also joined in. The purlins are of the napdori type, in a half-five-purlin frame composed only of long rafters, without short rafters, with a plain-eaved hip-and-gable roof finished with wagudo tiles. The gotganchae is three bays wide and one bay deep; its walls are enclosed in a U-shaped layout with fire-resistant hwabangbyeok walls, and its front is made up of plank doors and plank walls.
