Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMoeunjeong was built on the old site of Seoam Hermitage, which Tae-yong (1827–1895), a 28th-generation descendant of the Poeun branch of the Yeongil Jeong clan, had established in his later years as a retreat for teaching and self-cultivation. After the hermitage later fell into ruin, his great-great-grandsons erected a pavilion on its old site and named it Moeunjeong. The pavilion is a tiled-roof building with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof, three bays across the front and two bays deep. It is enclosed by an earth-and-stone wall capped with tiles; the four-pillar gate that once stood at the front has since collapsed. The floor plan follows the "central hall flanked by side rooms" (jungdang hyeopsil) type, with a daecheong, a wooden-floored central hall, flanked by one ondol (heated) room on either side, and a half-bay-wide projecting bay (toekan) at the front. Four-panel folding doors are fitted across the front of the daecheong to form an enclosed wooden-floored room, and plain balustrades surround the toekan. The roof frame is a five-purlin (oryanga) structure with iikgong-type brackets and double eaves; a trapezoidal board strut rises from the top beam (jongnyang) to support the ridge purlin and its supporting timber (jangheo).
