Dorim Village School, Yeongju
영주 도림서당 · 榮州 道林書堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krRebuilt in 1848 and relocated to its present site in 1872, this seodang (village school) stands facing southwest on the mid-slope of a hill in Seodanggol. The building is a tile-roofed, hip-and-gable house four bays wide across the front and two bays deep. Its plan is of the jungdang-hyeopsil type, centred on a two-bay daecheong (open timber-floored hall) flanked by a single ondol room on each side; a narrow board-floor veranda runs along the front of the hall, and a built-in storage recess is set into the rear wall of each ondol room. The frame is a five-purlin structure in which a trapezoidal king-post rises from the ridge beam to support the ridge purlin and its supporting beam, with sora, small decorative support blocks, used throughout the structure. Nearby stands Isan Seowon, a Confucian academy, showing this area's long tradition as a centre of education. Even after modern educational institutions were established during the Japanese colonial period, lecture meetings continued to be held here, and record books have been preserved down to the present day, giving this seodang a genuine historical tradition as a surviving traditional educational institution.
