Seated Stone Shakyamuni Buddha of Daegaksa Temple, Bonghwa
봉화 대각사 석조석가여래좌상 · 奉化 大覺寺 石造釋迦如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Seated Stone Shakyamuni Buddha is said to have been brought in 1949 from a temple on the East Sea coast to Chilseongam, the hermitage that was the predecessor of the present Daegaksa Temple. Carved from bulseok, a soft stone (zeolite), the statue is 93 cm tall, with a head 32 cm long, shoulders 43 cm wide and knees 60 cm wide. It is in good condition, with no damage or loss, but the hands appear unnatural in form and are judged to have been added in a later restoration. The right hand forms the bhumisparsha mudra (the earth-touching gesture), while the left hand rests palm upward, and the figure sits in the full lotus position with the right foot placed over the left. The head is very large, giving the figure a proportion of roughly three head-lengths, and the head, upper body and lower body appear almost stacked like blocks. The knees are relatively wide and high, so that the depth from knee to hip is comparatively long.
