Yugudang Hall, Yeongcheon
영천 육우당 · 永川 六友堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYugudang is the hall where Seongjae An Hu-jeong (1659-1702), a scholar of King Sukjong's reign in the Joseon dynasty, once resided. It is said to be the place where his eldest son An Yeo-taek, known as Yugudang and born in 1682, together with his five brothers, strengthened their fraternal bond and devoted themselves to study. The hall was relocated to its present site in the late Joseon period. After the Korean War, the left bay of its two-bay daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) was converted into a heated ondol room for everyday use, until it was restored to its original form in the autumn of 2010. The column-head area of Yugudang is built in a double-bracket (i-ikgong) structure. The delicate carving of the brackets at the front, the solid timber framework above, the circular panel-shaped king-post at the centre of the daecheong carved with a pinwheel motif, and the use of a single unbroken beam as the main crossbeam despite the front-and-rear bay structure, are all valuable for allowing the hall's original form at the time of construction to be studied.
