Mangunjeong is a pavilion-style building. A caretaker's building (jaesa) originally stood here but was destroyed by fire around 1960, and the pavilion is now maintained by its owner's descendants. Jo Heung-bok, known by his pen name Mangun, was a scholar who lived in seclusion in the Yeongyang area in the late Joseon period, training younger students; he is said to have been a man of outstanding scholarship and character. Mangunjeong is a distinctive seodang, or village school, of the late Joseon period, an educational institution that, set against a mountain village, was responsible for moral instruction within the local rural community. It was repaired in 2007, and although some parts have been altered, its original form is well preserved. It is a rare surviving seodang building in the Yeongyang area.
