Songdangjeongsa Temple, Gumi
구미 송당정사 · 龜尾 松堂精舍

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSongdangjeongsa, Gumi was built in 1496, the second year of Yeonsangun's reign, beside the Nakdonggang River as a site for lecturing and study, by Park Yeong (pen name Songdang, 1471–1540), a military official and man of letters of the mid-Joseon period, when he retired to his hometown of Seonsan. The present building was rebuilt in the 1860s. Songdang not only mastered and practised a comprehensive range of learning spanning civil affairs, military affairs and even medicine, but the scholarly network that drew together the lineages of Neo-Confucian learning continues, to this day, to bring together various clans of the Yeongnam region — especially the Seonsan area — inspiring them to honour him and to carry on gatherings in his memory. Songdangjeongsa is built in a simple, unadorned style, and an unusual reconstruction record survives describing the scale and layout of the building, making it possible to trace the building's origins and the course of its changes with relative accuracy; this, together with the historical value of Songdang's scholarly lineage, gives the building its significance.
