Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNamgyeongdae Pavilion, Yeongyang is a pavilion built on a low hill beside a bend of the Banbyeoncheon Stream, in a setting of exceptionally fine scenery. It was founded by Kwon Ji (pen name Yongdam, 1567–1637) of the Andong Kwon clan; it was inherited by his son Kwon Chang-eop (pen name Beongok, 1600–1663), who made it his villa retreat; and it was rebuilt, after falling into disrepair, by his grandson Kwon Tae-si (pen name Santaekjae, 1635–1719), who made it a place for academic study and for training younger scholars. Namgyeongdae later fell into ruin again, before being rebuilt in 1916 as a jungdang-hyeopsil-hyeong pavilion (a hall with a central room flanked by narrower side rooms). The pavilion rebuilt in 1916 fell into serious disrepair again through the Japanese colonial period and the turmoil following liberation, and the building now standing is a jungdang-hyeopsil-hyeong structure, three bays wide and one-and-a-half bays deep, rebuilt in 1993. Although the building rebuilt in 1993 differs in some details from its predecessor, its scale, location, and the arrangement of and relationship to the surrounding space maintain the form it had when rebuilt in 1916, and, as its name suggests, it occupies a fine site amid very beautiful scenery. It stands on a hill at the point where the Banbyeoncheon and Dongsancheon streams meet, surrounded on all sides by pine groves that make for a beautiful landscape, and it functioned as a place of education for honing scholarship and training younger students. In particular, father and son Kwon Chang-eop and Kwon Tae-si, as members of the Yeongnam school of scholars connected to the teaching lineage of Toegye, used Namgyeongdae as a place to associate with eminent Confucian scholars of the Yeongnam region. They also organised a "yakgye" (a mutual-aid society), holding communal gatherings at Namgyeongdae together with prominent local figures, making it a hub for operating this network of personal connections.
