Cheoindang Hall, Yeongdeok, is recorded as having been restored by Nam Pil-dae (1608–1666), who held the post of chambong, of the Yeongyang Nam clan, and later restored again by Nam Dal-man (1713–1784); through a continuous series of large and small repairs since then, it has survived to the present day. In the past this building was an annex to a head-family house (jongga), and it is regrettable that no remains of the original head-family house can be found today. However, the former appearance of the head-family house can be inferred from the main hall (anchae) and the ancestral shrine (sadang) built after the Korean War. Cheoindang is a representative building of the Yeongyang Nam clan, which has lived for about 600 years in Illyang-ri, Yeongdeok, and it has served as a focal point for the clan. The Yeongyang Nam clan of Illyang-ri was active from the 17th century onward as part of the Yeongnam School, and Cheoindang holds historical significance as the central building of that clan.
