Joyang Assembly Hall in Hyomok-dong, Daegu
대구 효목동 조양회관 · 大邱 孝睦洞 朝陽會館

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building is an assembly hall built during the Japanese colonial period by national leaders, including Seo Sang-il (1887-1962), who had carried out the anti-Japanese national movement in China, Manchuria and elsewhere, with the aim of instilling a spirit of independence in the public and in young people. It was named Joyang Assembly Hall, meaning "a place where the morning sun shines," and it carried out an enlightenment campaign to awaken national consciousness among the youth of the Daegu region. The projecting entrance porch at the centre of the façade takes the form of a flat roof raised on four square stone columns, with semicircular arches decoratively spanning between the columns. A small triangular gable on the roof of the projecting porch lends it a dignified composition emphasising the frontality of the building, and it is regarded as an outstanding example of 1920s modern architecture. In 1984 it was relocated to its present site from its former location in front of Dalseong Park.
