Former Main Building of Jeollanam-do Provincial Government, Gwangju
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built in 1930, this building is significant as a government office building completed with the participation of the Korean architect Kim Sun-ha in its design and construction, at a time when Japanese architects monopolised the design and construction of such official buildings. For more than 70 years after its construction it served as the administrative centre of Jeollanam-do, and in 1980 it was also the actual site of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, making it a historic location in the modern and contemporary history of the Jeolla region. On the façade, three windows are set vertically side by side, and between the windows the capitals are decorated with a simplified Corinthian order, a distinctive design not seen in buildings of that period.
