Former Main Building of Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Government, Daejeon
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Built in 1932, this building was newly constructed when the seat of the provincial government was moved from Gongju to Daejeon, and during the Korean War it was also used as a temporary government office. When first built it was a two-storey brick structure, but around 1960 a third storey with a hipped roof and wide windows was added. Its floor plan is in the 'E' shape typical of government office buildings erected during the Japanese colonial period, and the exterior is finished with the light brown scratch tiles fashionable at the time. The interior walls of the ground floor are decorated with a carved concave-convex (凹凸) pattern, and the corners of the columns and base are curved. As a provincial government building now more than 90 years old, it also carries great symbolic value as a structure that has lived through Korea's modern and contemporary history.
