Eoeun Chapel of Jinan Catholic Church
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This building was established as the first parish church in Jinan; it became a gongso, a chapel subordinate to a main parish and usually without a resident priest, when Handeul Parish was established in 1921, before being raised once more to the status of a parish church in 1947. It is a single-storey timber building with a floor plan shaped like the Chinese character 亞, six bays wide at the front and two bays deep at the side; inside, two rows of columns clearly divide the space into a nave and aisles in a basilica-style layout. It preserves relatively well the architectural style of Korea's early hanok-style Catholic churches, and carries great historical significance as a chapel built within a community of believers that had formed as a result of the persecution of Catholics.
