Former Simsang Public Primary School, Mokpo
구 목포공립심상소학교 · 舊 木浦公立尋常小學校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1929 as the hall of the first elementary school established in Mokpo for Japanese children. Reinforced concrete, with the front and both side elevations faced in tile of two colours and narrow arched windows on the upper floor. It is the only colonial-period primary school building left in Mokpo and a good example of how such halls were built. It is also worth knowing what the schools Korean children attended looked like by comparison, because the difference was the policy. It is the modern history museum of the city now, at the centre of a district where a great deal of colonial-period building survives — more than anywhere else in Korea, because Mokpo grew as a Japanese port and then stopped growing.
